The Gutenberg Project - This is the best! It has a huge and growing collection, including some of my favourite books (for eg, Jerome K. Jerome - Three Men in a Boat, Three Men on the Bummel, hysterically funny). This lot are available as text files (or zip files) and can be downloaded and read on one's machine (as well as online, of course).
